DREAMS CAN COME TRUE

Dreams can come true, and it can happen to you ¡if you are young and believe.

There was a song written about this quite a while ago, but Tommy Lee, even at a young age, felt that this would never happen to him. He was settled with the fact that things would never work out for him.

When Tommy Lee was a young lad in Utah, his brother and he both received puppies for Christmas. As it turned out, Danny Lee¡¯s puppy was in fine health, but Tommy¡¯s puppy had to be given back because of its poor health. Well, that was the beginning of the events that had an impact on his life from that day forth.

The amazing thing was, though, that even though things did not always work out the way that Tommy Lee wanted, he believed and never stopped believing. Time moved along, and Tommy Lee grew up and decided that it was time to leave his farming community in this small town of Mount. He remembered what his aunt Edna had always said: "If you don¡¯t fit into this world and are not quite sure of what to do, then go through the motions and surely something will happen to you."

However, nothing was happening in Tommy¡¯s life, and that was the main reason why he wanted to leave his hometown¡ªhe had a very delightful family and truly loved all of them with all his heart. His mother and father understood the feelings that Tommy had, and they bid him a fond farewell as Tommy was off on his new adventure.

He was not sure what he wanted to do in life, but one thing was certain and that was he would never give up until his dreams did come true.

A few years had passed, and Tommy settled in the Midwest. He landed a job in the forestry department at a state park and enjoyed interacting with the wildlife and visitors. Tommy had a lot of time to think about the years he had spent in Mount. One of his fondest memories was of a beautiful girl that he had come to know while in school. Her name was Helen, and they had become the best of friends. Tommy Lee had quite the crush on her and many times wanted to ask her to be his girlfriend. But Tommy did not believe that this beautiful, energetic, and popular girl would want to go out with him because of all the past times that his dreams and hopes did not come true.

He would reflect on all the good times they shared. Tommy and Helen never had their first kiss or anything like that, but being in the same room with her would bring nothing but joy to him. He often thought that maybe if he had asked her to be his girlfriend, she might have said yes. However, how could something that good ever happen to me? Thought Tommy Lee.

He decided to write Helen a letter and find out what she was doing, as friends do. He really did not expect to hear back from her¡ªhe was not even sure that she would remember him or if she was even living at the same address.

Tommy had high hopes, but that was it for the time being. Tommy lost his job at the state park due to his manager hiring his new son-in-law. Tommy packed his things and, being the firm believer that things do have a way of working out if you give them a chance, he headed west to Colorado and started working in a logging camp.

He was assigned to the transportation division, along with a few other people. After getting settled in, he wrote back to his old boss and gave him his new address, in hopes of getting a letter from Helen. Tommy missed his family and started writing them letters, letting them know how things were going.

Billy was the newest member of the logging team and they he and Tommy soon became good friends. They often talked about life and how it was when they were younger. Tommy talked a lot about his feelings for Helen and came to the realization that he truly loved her, but he felt he never really had a chance of being with her.

Even though Tommy had been at the logging camp longer than Billy, Billy was chosen to become the new supervisor. Tommy had no hard feelings¡ªhe knew that this and other similar events would always have the same outcome. Tommy kept hoping and still firmly believed that his turn would come.

About this time, he received a letter from his family back home; all were doing fine. In addition, to his astonishment¡ªhe could not believe his eyes¡ªthere also was a letter from Helen. All this time thinking about Helen and never expecting to hear from her, and now, here was a letter from her.

He often thought what it would have been like to be part of her life. Well, just like a young boy receiving his first kiss, Tommy Lee¡¯s heart was pounding. He gently held the letter in his hands, anticipating opening it up, when all of a sudden, and a strong wind blew the letter from his hands. Panic took over as he ran down a steep embankment, chasing after the letter that meant the world to him.

You can probably guess what happened¡ªTommy never found the letter. He was so upset over this event that he started spending more time alone. He wanted to write Helen another letter, but he was too embarrassed to tell Helen that he lost the letter that she¡¯d sent him and that he had no idea what she had said in the letter. She was the girl of his dreams; he had had a chance to talk with her, write to her, and possible even be with her. But now, all his hopes were lost ¡ and then, one afternoon in the early spring, a manager came up to the logging camp to check on orders¡ªand he had the letter that had blown out of Tommy¡¯s hands. It had been blown down the embankment and gotten lodged in one of the logs that was going downstream.

The sadness that Tommy felt seemed to be instantly lifted away, and a wonderful smile came about his face. He sat down and opened the letter as fast as he could. The gentle handwriting, the smell of perfume (what was left of it)¡ªit was a letter from the girl of his dreams.

Well, to his amazement, it seemed that Helen had the same feelings towards Tommy Lee as he did for her. It was not exactly written in words, but he sensed it in the way she was writing to him. Joy came over Tommy, because for the first time, he felt that things would finally start working for him.

He started writing to Helen two and three times a week and would receive the same amount of letters from her. They would talk about the early days and knew that if only they had been more honest about their feelings, they would be together now. Tommy and Helen realized that they should be together. Tommy was in Colorado, and Helen was living in Chicago, working as a schoolteacher.

Summer was about halfway through when they decided to meet in the town of St. Louis, Missouri. Since their only means of transportation was by train and stagecoach, they decided to meet on July 15, 1895, at the Old Saint Louis Boarding House.

Excitement was only a small part of what Tommy was feeling. He stopped working at the logging camp after saving up enough money, and he gave all his friends a grand good-bye as he embarked upon his journey to be with the girl of his dreams. Helen bid farewell to all her students; friends and all the nice people that she had met. Tommy traveling by foot and stagecoach and Helen rode on the train.

Well, as you might assume by now, they never met. Tommy Lee arrived at the Old Saint Louis Boarding House and remained there for some time, waiting for Helen. A few years passed, but Tommy never received any more news as to where she was and or what had happened to Helen. He finally received a letter from home and found out that Helen had returned to Mount to help her family. He realized that, once again, his dreams might not come true.

He never wrote back to find out why Helen did not meet him; he figured that he was not important enough in her life. Tommy knew in his heart that he still loved her, but it was not meant to be. Tommy gathered his things and moved West again, as he had a long time ago, no better off and no worse off.

Another saying that Tommy remembered was "The wise person should always stay calm and be guided by reason." Deep in his heart, he believed that dreams could come true¡ªbut not right now.

Tommy moved on to upper Oregon and went upon the search for gold and a peaceful life. Tommy believed, and as the story goes, it was his belief and kindness that finally brought him the happiness that he so longed for.

Tommy Lee found plenty of gold and became very rich and successful, but there was still something missing in his life. He still believed that his dreams could come true. He seldom thought of Helen and continued prospering. As time passed, Tommy gathered all his things and moved further north. He settled in a small mining camp and went on to become the leading citizen, and Tommy, along with the other town¡¯s citizens, named the town Mount, after his hometown. He kept in touch with his family and never mentioned what had happened between him and Helen.

Tommy became very sad one day and started walking off into the wilderness. As days passed, Tommy walked closer and closer to the mountain that could be seen from Mount. He traveled up onto the mountain and could see the surrounding valley all about him, and once again, he started thinking about Helen. He wondered what had happened and became very angry as to why he should be alone and not with the girl of his dreams.

He stood atop the peak of the mountain and proclaimed, "If my dreams should come true, and I truly find the joy of life with Helen, may this mountain explode from its peak and show the world the happiness that I have found. And I will name this mountain Mount Saint Helen."

Tommy returned to Mount, but as all good things end, so did the gold mining. Tommy left and nobody heard from him for a long time.

Dreams can come true, as the tale is told, because Tommy and Helen did find each other and lived many happy years together.

In addition, Mount Saint Helen did erupt, but nobody knows if it was from Tommy¡¯s love for Helen¡ªor if it was just a volcano. What do you think?
